Glossary

A

Abrasive materials [əˈbreɪsɪv məˈtɪərɪəlz]   abrasives – metals, alloys, rocks and minerals (natural and artificial). Natural A.m. – diamond, corundum, granite, quartz (flint). Artificial electrocorundum, carborundum, synthetic boron carbide.

Ex. The diamond-tipped saw blade is designed for cutting through abrasive materials such as reinforced concrete and hard stone.

Activated carbon [`æk.tɪ.veɪtədˈkɑː.bən]produced by removing the tarry substances from mined coal or pistachio coal and forming a branched porous network. A.c. It is used in gas purification, as an adsorbent and catalytic additive carrier, in industry to capture valuable organic solvents, in vacuum technology – to create sorption pumps.

Ex. The main property of activated carbon is a high sorption capacity, which is caused by a large number of pores in its surface.

Abrasive tool [əˈbreɪsɪv tuːl] – a tool used for abrasive processing of objects made of metal, glass and other materials.

Ex. Abrasive tools on bakelite bond are manufactured from materials of marks 14A and  25A.

B

Barrage /ˈbarɑː(d)ʒ/ A method of protecting mines and quarries from underground water by completely or partially blocking mine seams with waterproofing devices

Ex. The construction of a barrage along the river aimed to regulate water flow and generate hydroelectric power.

Barite Ore / beˌrīt ɔː/ – contains barite mineral – BaSO4;  A group of minerals with BaO that can be economically extracted and processed on an industrial scale

Ex. Miners extracted barite ore from the depths of the earth, anticipating a lucrative market demand for the mineral.

N

Nitrogen [`naɪ.trə.dʒən] (French nitrogen, Greek a-negation of load and zoe-life) is a chemical element, symbol N (Latin Nitrogenium), at.n. 7, atm 14 0067. Nitrogen is a colorless and odorless gas; density (kg/m3): gas 1.25, liquid 808. Nitrogen is used as an inert medium in the synthesis of ammonia, in various processes and devices, and also as a refrigerant in nitrogen refrigeration units.

Ex. In mining, nitrogen gas is used to keep certain areas safe by preventing explosions and fires.
