Amalgamation [əmælɡəˈmeɪʃ(ə)n] – in metallurgy – the extraction of metals from ores using mercury. When metals are wetted with mercury, they form an amalgam, in which case they are separated from loose rock and sand. A. extraction of primary metals from ores and concentrates (in combination with more technically advanced processes, for example, sionization), processing of light metal waste (in secondary metallurgy), extraction of rare metals by the electrolytic method, etc. is used for its intended purpose.
Ex. Support municipal or privately owned amalgamation centres where miners can bring gold ore for closed loop mercury amalgamation by technicians with proper controls.
