Marl /mɑrl/ (German Mergel, from Latin marga) – a mixed sedimentary rock clay-carbonate composition; contains 30-90% carbonates (calcite, less often dolomite) and, accordingly, from 70 to 10% clay particles. Depending on the relative amount of components, a continuous series is possible: limestone – clayey limestone – marl – calcareous clay – clay. Based on the mineral composition of carbonates, marls are divided into calcareous and dolomite.
